Aunt Rose's Room
Aunt Rose's Room
Rose Hjort Lorentzen was a beloved family member of Birgitte Dinesen, the 8th generation of the Dinesen family at Kragerup Estate. She shares her memories of Aunt Rose:
“The woman behind this room was named Rose Hjort Lorentzen, but I only ever heard her referred to as Aunt Rose. She was my great-grandmother Ida Dinesen’s niece. She was single, which was certainly not prestigious at the time. She had been married but had no children, and whether she was divorced or not was not a topic of conversation.”
“Aunt Rose lived in an apartment on Gråbrødre Torv in Copenhagen but often visited us at Kragerup during my childhood. I remember her as a fun, sweet, and loving aunt. She would often be found darning socks or knitting. She had no family other than us, so she always spent Christmas and New Year with us. She was there when my father lit the candles on the Christmas tree and the electric lights were turned off. We would enjoy watching the candles burn down. When only three candles were left, my sisters and I would make wishes silently, and then the candle would be relit. We had many pleasant times with Aunt Rose.”
No photographs of Aunt Rose have ever been found.
