Kragerup Gods
Kragerup’s draft horses and crew
The photograph from 1933 depicts an impressive group of Belgian draft horses, which were a crucial workforce at Kragerup Estate in the 1930s and 40s. These powerful animals were indispensable in agriculture, and Jørgen Eigil Wiffert Dinesen, the estate owner at the time, had a special passion for them. He not only ran a traditional farm but also a large breeding operation for Belgian horses.
The Brothers and the Belgian Horses
Jørgen Dinesen’s interest in Belgian horses began early and became a lifelong passion. He dedicated much time to improving the quality of the breeding and collaborated with his brother, Mogens Dinesen, to ensure the best horses for work on the estate. The two brothers shared a deep interest in breeding and farming, making them a strong team. Mogens, who was also connected to other estates, brought his expertise into Jørgen's breeding efforts, and together they developed a large and respected herd of powerful Belgian horses.
In the photograph, the animals can be seen lined up, ready for the day's work. The horses pulled plows and wagons through the fields and forests surrounding Kragerup, helping shape the landscape we know today.
